MeatEater Time Machine Custer's Last Stand T-Shirt
For 2026, we’re taking a trip through time to revisit the moments that shaped American outdoor culture and influenced the way we hunt, fish, explore, and connect with the land.
We’re calling it the MeatEater Time Machine. It’s a yearlong look back at the stories, people, and turning points that built the outdoor world we’re part of today.
June 25, 1876. The Battle of the Little Bighorn, known to Plains Indians as the Battle of the Greasy Grass, saw Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry ride into a massive encampment of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors.
It was such an insane move on Custer’s part that some of the Native combatants figured he was drunk. The battle against Custer’s immediate force of around 260 men was so short that one Lakota warrior compared the length of the fight to the amount of time that it takes a hungry man to eat dinner.
What began as a confident push to force Lakota and Northern Cheyenne families onto reservations ended in complete disaster, leaving behind a battlefield defined by hubris, miscalculation, and a desperate fight for survival.
