For 2026, we’re taking a trip through time to revisit the moments that shaped American outdoor culture and influenced the way we hunt, fish, explore, and connect with the land.

We’re calling it the MeatEater Time Machine. It’s a yearlong look back at the stories, people, and turning points that built the outdoor world we’re part of today.

1769 – the next stop on the MeatEater Time Machine takes us to the Cumberland Gap and the journeys of Daniel Boone. One of America’s most recognized frontiersmen (and all-around pretty badass dude), Boone helped establish a route through the Appalachian Mountains, building on paths long used by Indigenous peoples, that opened a gateway to the frontier beyond. This narrow mountain pass became a critical corridor for hunters, explorers, and settlers pushing into Kentucky and the interior. Longhunters traveled these routes on foot and horseback, spending extended seasons in the wilderness and relying on their knowledge of the land to survive. The Wild West we think of today would come later. For Boone and his contemporaries, what waited beyond the mountains was the First Far West. .
