This 20 x 16" photo print is of a Bull Moose in full velvet in a large patch of golden currant. Photo was taken by MeatEater production crew member Mary Margaret in May of 2021 near Ennis, Montana. She had just finished paddle boarding down the Madison river, camera in tow, safely tucked away in a dry bag. It was a 4+ Moose encounter weekend, but this Velvet Bull was by far the most memorable. We spent over an hour together just as the sun was setting and illuminating the Madison Range in the distance with a rose glow. His side-eyed stare made Mary Margaret's amateur wildlife photographer heart race. Locking eyes with a creature of this size and magnitude was incredibly intimate and powerful -- it was a shared moment in time that words fail to sufficiently describe.
