MeatEater Time Machine Jed Smith T-Shirt
In 2026, we’re taking a trip through time to revisit the moments that shaped American outdoor culture and influenced the way we hunt, fish, explore, and connect with the land.
We’re calling it the MeatEater Time Machine. It’s a yearlong look back at the stories, people, and turning points that built the outdoor world we’re part of today.
September, 1823. The latest stop on the MeatEater Time Machine is 1823, when trapper and explorer Jedediah Strong Smith was mauled by a grizzly bear in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The bear tackled him, broke his ribs, ripped open his side, and tore away his scalp and ear. When the bear finally retreated, his companions rushed in to help.
With no doctors present for hundreds of miles, Smith convinced a friend to stitch his scalp back on. He wore his hair long for the rest of his short life in order to hide the scars. He was killed 5 years later, in 1831, when he encountered a group of Comanche warriors in present-day Kansas.
