The latest stop on the MeatEater Time Machine is 1823, when trapper and explorer Jedediah Strong Smith was mauled by a grizzly bear in the Black Hills of South Dakota. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bear tackled him, broke his ribs, ripped open his side, and tore away his scalp and ear. When the bear finally retreated, his companions rushed in to help.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith no doctors present for hundreds of miles, Smith convinced a friend to stitch his scalp back on. He wore his hair long for the rest of his short life in order to hide the scars.
